Organic beauty is something quite new to me. I alway dismissed the market too easily whenever I'd see a product or brand, and that was mostly due to my uneducated and unaware knowledge of how great organic beauty really is. Not only ingredient-wise, but also in terms of presentation and quality of products. I always thought the makeup to be too 'natural' looking (which for a long time I was not a fan of until the most recent years) or that the beauty products didn't provide the same vividness that non-organic makeup does. I was very, very wrong. After becoming obsessed with Bite Beauty and trying out their products, I was introduced into the world of organic makeup. The brand I kept seeing everywhere was ILIA Beauty and I knew that I had to try them next. I was kind enough to be send some products from ILIA Beauty themselves and I'm so happy to bring this post to you today.

ILIA was made out of the awareness that our body should be taken care of to the most optimum ability. Especially taking in mind that our skin is "the largest organ [source] and can absorb about anything we put onto its surface." Dedicated to creating the purest products available, ILIA Beauty is formulated in an ethical-sustainable approach to makeup and uses "certified organic bio-active botanicals that nourish and rejuvenate the skin." With products filled with up to 85% bioactive organic ingredients, this Canada-born LA-based brand doesn't sacrifice style with its pigmented and on-trend products. ILIA Beauty has a unique, stylish vibe amongst the mass amounts of organic makeup lines out there, and it's what has made it so popular today.

I've been inspired by businesswoman Sasha Plavsic, the founder of ILIA Beauty, of her story of creating the brand. She from the start was not only focused on the importance of visual aesthetic of the line but also on the ingredients. She wanted to provide beautiful products with nourishing, ethical roots that could maintain "full visibility from start to finish." Sasha's background in branding and marketing allowed her to fully understand the retail-side of what it would take to make ILIA successful in the already crowded organic beauty market, and since the first launch of 6 lip conditioners in Vancouver in 2011 ILIA has grown remarkably and flourished. It's become so successful that it's now found in some big retail spaces, such as SephoraNet-a-Porter, AnthropologieBeautylish, and more.

ILIA has a full range of makeup products: from lipsticks, cream blushers/bronzers, eyeshadows, foundation/concealer, to even a brush line. They've pretty much covered any and every single base! Not to mention they are certified organic AND cruelty-free, all in all it's just too good. One of the best things about ILIA is that the products pack quite a punch in terms of color and pigmentation, which I find to be a real negative for some organic beauty brands. The colors are unique, vibrant, and really compliment so many. The only two things I find lacking is their foundation and concealer shades, which are not very diverse (especially for darker skin tones).

ILIA was kind enough to send a couple products my way for review: Strike It Up*, a red lipstick with blue undertones and the brand's most classic red, Nobody's Baby*, a sheer nude lipstick from their Tinted Lip Conditioner line, and Sheer Vivid Tinted Moisturizer in Los Roques*, a semi-matte tinted moisturizer. I personally bought myself the Silken Shadow Stick in Age of Consent, which is an ash-brown metallic shade. Due to the heat here in Southern California, Strike It Up came partially melted so they were kind enough to re-send another shade in Nobody's Baby. I wanted to still include Strike It Up in my review because they originally sent it to me, plus it's a beautiful color that I think many of you will like (I'm obsessed with it!).

Ashy-brown metallic | 0.4oz/1.3g | $28.00 | (Buy here)

I'm an avid user of cream eyeshadow sticks, so much so that I have a whole makeup drawer on my vanity dedicated to them and other cream products! I knew that I had to at least try out one of ILIA's cream eyeshadow sticks, especially as they have such a great range of pretty colors. Age of Consent is a metallic ashy brown shade with a golden tint. It's kind of hard to explain this shade. It's a metallic that creates a somewhat duo-chrome shade effect, some instances it can look like what I've pictured and others more on the brown/purple side. You can easily build up the color and deep shade as it first swatches pretty sheer. If you notice, there are some little mini-chunks in the swatch, I'm not really sure what they are specifically? But they are little specks of black, brown, and I think silver. You can flatten out the product if you work it into the skin, but on first swatch it will look like what I've pictured here.

Due to the coconut and olive oils in this (along with organic carnauba wax and others), it never feels heavy and can easily be blended into the skin. A negative of that is it won't stay very long on the eyes without creasing, even if you use a primer beforehand. I've found the best way to keep it in place is to layer a shadow over it. Even better would just to keep it on the lid and not try to bring it up into the crease. Since I have hooded eyelids, creasing happens naturally for me and I'm not too fussed if a little bit happens. But if a looooot of the product does crease, then it's a bit annoying. This product is beautiful and has a lovely shade, you just need to be aware of the creasing and do whatever is personally best to make sure it doesn't totally just come off. I also have oily eyelids, so the oils in this, although moisturizing and great for the delicate eye area, really can make it a bit slippery.

I would love to try maybe two other colors out and see how they do. I really love using this product but it just takes some working with to perfect. The problem with these is that they never really 'set' once applied, so adding some powder eyeshadow on top (or below as a primer!) can help provide longevity of wear.

Strike It Up Lipstick and Nobody's Baby Tinted Lip Conditioner

.14oz/4g | $26.00 | (Buy Strike It Up) (Buy Nobody's Baby)

If there's one thing that makes ILIA so great, it's their lipsticks. I AM IN LOVE. Yes, all caps are needed. Strike It Up is a beautiful blue-toned classic red and Nobody's Baby is a sheer nude that is the perfect peachy-pink color to match any smokey eye. Strike It Up is a lot more opaque than Nobody's Baby and is a rich pigmented color. Nobody's Baby is part of their Tinted Lip Conditioner line, which works to soothe and condition the lips.

Strike It Up is a beautiful shade, part of your classic reds and perfect for the holiday season that will soon be upon us. ILIA describes it as a "creamy semi-matte finish" but I find there is no real drying-matte feeling to this lipstick. It is comparable to a satin in texture and opacity. It's creamy and applies well onto the lips, and doesn't emphasize any of my dry spots or lines. I got a good 3-4+ hours of wear without needing to re-apply. I find that ILIA's regular lipsticks are one of the most pigmented and creamy that I've worn. One swipe gives amazing color and opacity. Even without prepping my lips, I found that they still applied like normally and the nourishing ingredients of botanical oils and waxes worked to help any treat any dryness I had. It definitely has some shine to it and makes the lips look plumper and fuller. Due to the shape of the lipstick, the top tip worked great to help line and fill in the color. I still liked using a lip liner, regardless, but I love that its shape works even without one. I highly recommend trying any colors from their main lipstick line, especially this one and any deeper colors.

Nobody's Baby is quite popular when it comes to ILIA, it seems like this is their go-to nude shade. It's a sheer nude peachy-pink that us with fair skin strive to get for our smokey eyes or even regular day wear! It's just the perfect shade. I found that all I needed was some blusher, eyeliner and mascara, and popping this on just finished the whole look. One thing about their Tinted Lip Conditioners is that they resemble a balm when worn but are not very heavy on the lips. They are reminiscent of a cremesheen lipstick in texture and consistency, but are better pigmentation-wise. I find both lipsticks to be very light and you could easily apply a gloss if you felt the need to. Nobody's Baby is reaaaaally sheer. I had to go over and over probably 10 times on my lips to get it to how I wanted it. The great thing about it being a lip conditioner is that the lipstick doesn't bunch up if you do layer it multiple times. ILIA says that you can even mix colors together to create your own personalized one, which sounds really cool! As it sets it loses its glossy/shine appearance but still holds onto that balm texture. As someone with dry lips 24/7, I appreciate how well this lipstick works to treat and condition my lips. It doesn't stay too long on the lips before I have the need to re-apply, but I would love to try another color from this line as I love how they make my lips feel.

Sheer Vivid Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20

Los Roques (T1) | 1.9oz/50ml | $42.00 | (Buy here)

I'll be honest and say that before this I never owned any tinted moisturizers. With having troubled skin, I'm often finding ways to cover up as much as I can and often will make the unfortunate mistake of going 'cake face' due to my skin imperfections. From this past year I've tried experimenting and have actually enjoyed the days that I would wear minimal amounts of face products, even to start using BB creams and cushion foundations (both notably not the best in coverage for how bad my PIH skin is). I was really so excited to try this tinted moisturizer out from ILIA, especially knowing that it's aimed for combo/oily types and is packed full of botanicals to help calm and revitalize the skin. It's sold as a sunscreen with SPF 20, so not the best in compatibility for me since I usually only use 35-50 broad spectrum PA system ones. But I think for not being so out in the sun directly, like how you would be at the pool or beach, it's fine to use this.

All of the shade names are inspired by sand colors from exotic tropical beaches. Los Roques is the name of a Venezuelan archipelago and National Park in the Caribbean. The color leans more yellow in tone but has quite a neutral base to it, also. I swatched both the color and blended in color above it. As you can see, it matches my skin tone pretty well! You can barely tell that above the swatch is the blended color on my arm. It definitely has a semi-matte finish, not completely matte. It doesn't have very good coverage as it's sheer, but adding some concealer to spots did help. It has some great ingredients like Aloe Vera, Rosehip Oil, Rosemary, Jasmine, Lavender, and Sodium Hyaluronate, working to seal in moisture, nourish, and combat against free radicals. I think that this is a great product but you'll need to be limited about when to wear it, probably shopping or some activity where you're not completely out in the sun for too long of a time. It includes Zinc Oxide (12%) and Titanium Oxide (2%) as physical sunscreen ingredients, which work very well since they don't penetrate into the skin themselves and instead act as a barrier to block UVB/UVA light. This also doesn't have the thinnest consistency, it's more on the medium-thick side, so keep that in mind if you're averse to that consistency. I do need to note that there isn't a huge amount of product for the price, but as a product that I can use just to quickly apply as I'm running out the door or for running errands, I think that this works perfectly.

If tinted moisturizers aren't your thing, I would say to check out their Vivid Foundation as its medium-full coverage and has a lovely radiant finish.

I have to give a big thanks to ILIA Beauty for sending this my way and allowing me to try some of their products! I'm really so impressed and would love to try more from their line. They currently have a Fall collection out, with three lipstick shades: The Brides, a pink tan, and Madam Mia, a blush mauve, are sitting in my cart as I write this! Lucy's Party is a deep oxblood, a gorgeous dark Fall color.
